Georgia Spine & Disc Treats Herniated Discs with Non-Invasive Spinal Decompression

Spinal discs provide cushioning between the vertebrae, protecting them from contact. The disc is comprised of annular fibers, which contain the fluid, or nucleus pulposis. Although the annular fibers are relatively resilient, they can be damaged by the repetitive motions of twisting and bending the body. When people develop Degenerative Disc Disease, the annular fibers weaken more rapidly and the probability of herniation increases.

Symptoms of Herniated Discs

When the nucleus pulposis leaks and places pressure on the spinal nerves, pain radiates throughout the back, neck, and extremities. Depending on the placement of the herniated disc, pain may be concentrated in the upper or lower back, or in the neck.

While most herniated disc patients are older adults, it is possible for younger adults, adolescents, and even children to suffer the condition. Sports injuries and automobile accidents often cause herniated discs in younger patients. Patients of all ages report pain when they sit, walk, or stand, particularly on hard surfaces.

Bulging discs are related to herniated discs. They form when annular fibers are torn only partially. Both bulging and herniated discs can accompany Degenerative Disc Disease. The two conditions present similar symptoms and can be treated with non-invasive spinal decompression.

Types of Herniated Discs

Herniated discs develop when annular fibers of the spinal discs begin to tear. As the nucleus pulposis leaks, the fluid pushes on the nerves in the spine. While there are many types of herniated discs, the following are the most common:

1. Protruding discs: In this first stage of herniation, annular fibers rip slightly and nucleus pulposis starts to leak. A protruding disc may not manifest for years, until Degenerative Disc Disease exacerbates the condition. Protruding discs cause less severe pain than extruding and sequestered discs and can generally be treated without surgery.

2. Extruding discs: Although less severe than protruding discs, extruding discs develop when the disc fluid actually enters the spinal column and contacts the nerves. Because extruding discs can cause acute and chronic pain, they often require surgical treatment.

3. Sequestered discs: The most serious of herniated discs, a sequestered disc occurs when the nucleus pulposis separates completely from the disc and floats freely in the spinal column. Once a disc becomes sequestered, it is impossible to return the fluid. Usually surgery is the only option.

Treatment for Herniated Discs

Patients with herniated discs often believe that surgery or steroid injections are their only treatment option. However, in many cases spinal decompression can naturally restore disc fluid and repair a herniated disc. This treatment creates a vacuum within the disc, so that the fluid is forced back into the disc.
